Term: Drow Definition: drow are the dark skinned, white haired, slender cousins to the surface elves, who they call "faeries". In ancient times, the drow deceived their cousins many times, only to find themselves in war and as a result they were banished to the bowels of the earth, to the harsh and dark land called the Underdark . Then they found the goddess, Lolth , or rather Lolth found them. Attuning their minds and bodies to the magical emanations of Underdark, the drow became more powerful than their cousins.
Their slender and seemingly fragile bodies, angular and shapley features only hides the dark heart that lies within. Drow are powerful, cunning, evil, adept and ultimately chaotic. Encouraged to further the chaos by their vile deity, the drow live their lives, and take more lives to gain power and dominance.
As a superior race of the Underdark, and not as secluded and single-minded as the illithid or beholder race, the drow consider themselves the masters of the land. Their beautiful, magical cities throughout the Underdark stands as beacons of their power. Most reknown of these Lolth dominated cities are Menzoberranzan and Ched Nasad , the city of spiders and the city of webs.
The Lolth drow have a matriarchal society. Females of the race are more powerful, both in body and in rights, than the dimunitive males. The whole social structure is formed of the separate drow houses, led by the matron mothers, each a castle and an armoy to itself. The drow houses are in relentless rivalry, which often turns to war. Lolth applauds even encourages these house wars to keep her children in utter chaos.
Not all drow are evil and not all of them worship Lolth. Ellistraee the dancing drow goddess of the hunt and moon sanctions her followers on the surface to dance to the moon and hunt in sacred rituals. Vhaerun the masked drow god of thievery and deceit, wages a crusade against Lolth, and his followers are mostly males.
